Shou Sugi Ban Wood Treatment Processes

Menu

Shou Sugi Ban is a traditional Japanese technique that enhances the durability and aesthetic appeal of wood through a careful combination of charring, brushing, and wood oil treatment. The main processes of Shou Sugi Ban wood:

1. Charring in the Chamber:

  • The process begins with carefully selected wood, typically Spruce, Pine, Larch and Accoya, although other types can also be used based on client preferences and project requirements.

  • The wood is placed inside a controlled charring chamber, ensuring the environment is carefully regulated with the aid of transporters, to achieve consistent results.

  • The wood is subjected to controlled flames, charring the surface evenly. This step is crucial for several reasons:

    • It increases the wood's resistance to pests, rots, and decay, extending its lifespan.

    • Charring brings out the natural beauty of the wood, enhancing its texture and grain while creating unique patterns and colours.

  • Careful monitoring of the level of fire exposure and duration is essential to achieve the desired level of charring without compromising the structural integrity of the wood.

2. Brushing:

  • Once charred, the wood undergoes a meticulous brushing process to remove a charcoal layer.

  • Specialised brushing machinery is used to gently remove the surface layer, revealing the wood's natural texture and grain underneath.

  • Brushing serves multiple purposes:

    • It smoothens the surface, making it more tactile and visually appealing.

    • It removes any loose particles that may otherwise detract from the finished appearance.

  •  Brushing also helps in controlling the depth of charring, allowing for customisation based on project requirements and aesthetic preferences.

  • This step requires skilled craftsmanship to ensure uniformity and precision across the entire surface of the wood.

3. Wood Oil Treatment:

  • After brushing, the charred wood is treated with a high-quality wood oil or finish.

  • The choice of oil may vary depending on factors such as the wood species, desired finish, and environmental considerations.

  • The oil penetrates the wood's surface, nourishing and protecting it from moisture, UV damage, and other environmental factors.

  • Additionally, the oil enhances the wood's natural colour, deepening its richness and adding a subtle sheen.

  • Proper application of the wood oil is critical to ensure thorough coverage and absorption, maximising its protective and aesthetic benefits.
