FROM TIMBER TO FINISHED SURFACE

Manufacturing built around the project

Inflamed charred timber manufacturing in Kaunas

Inflamed is a specialist charred timber manufacturer based in Kaunas. We work with architects, contractors, designers and private clients to turn a material specification into a finished order prepared for its intended application.

Species, surface treatment, profile, dimensions, board lengths and quantity are established before production. The timber then moves through a controlled sequence of charring, optional brushing, finishing, inspection and packaging.

Because timber is a natural material, variation is part of its character. Our role is to manage the production process carefully while preserving the texture and individuality of every board.

01 · SPECIFICATION

Every order begins with its purpose

Before manufacturing begins, we establish how and where the timber will be used. The application influences the choice of species, finish, profile, dimensions, board lengths and quantity.

  • Application
  • Project location
  • Preferred timber species
  • Preferred finish
  • Profile
  • Board width and thickness
  • Required lengths
  • Approximate quantity in m²
  • Target order date
  • Drawings or schedules
  • Reference photographs
  • Delivery location

If the complete specification has not yet been decided, our team can help identify suitable samples and discuss the available options.

02 · TIMBER PREPARATION

Selecting the material for the required finish

The species determines more than appearance. Grain, density, natural variation and board dimensions all influence how the timber responds to charring, brushing and finishing.

Reclaimed timber is handled as a separate material category because every batch has its own dimensions, history, surface and availability.

03 · CHARRING

The moment fire transforms the surface

The boards pass through Inflamed’s charring process, where the exposed timber surface is burned to create the required char. The response varies according to species, grain, moisture, board geometry and the intended finish.

The process is monitored to produce the surface required for the order rather than treating every species and finish identically.

The exact production settings are controlled by the factory team and adapted to the timber and finish.

04 · BRUSHING

Revealing the grain beneath the char

Where the selected finish requires brushing, the boards pass through industrial brushing equipment that removes the appropriate amount of surface char and exposes the grain beneath.

The character of the brushed surface depends on the timber species and the intended finish. This is why sample approval is important before a project order is confirmed.

05 · FINISHING

Colour, protection and surface character

After charring and brushing, the specified finish is applied according to the selected product. The treatment enriches the colour, highlights the grain and prepares the visible surface for its intended use.

The number of coats and maintenance requirements depend on the selected species, finish and project specification.

Colours shown on screen are indicative. Timber grain, lighting and natural variation affect the final appearance. Physical samples should be approved before ordering.

06 · PROFILE AND DIMENSIONS

Prepared for the intended installation

Every order must be aligned with the chosen application and installation build-up. Profile, board dimensions, effective cover and required lengths should be confirmed before production.

07 · INSPECTION

Checked before the order leaves the factory

Charred timber retains natural differences in grain and surface character. Inspection is focused on ensuring that the order corresponds with the confirmed species, finish, dimensions and general visual direction while respecting the natural variation of timber.

  • Correct timber species
  • Selected finish
  • Profile and dimensions
  • Board lengths
  • Surface treatment
  • Visible damage
  • Quantity
  • Order identification

Natural timber variation is not treated as a defect. Samples establish the intended finish range rather than guaranteeing that every board will look identical.

08 · PACKAGING

Prepared for handling and transport

Once inspected, the order is grouped, identified and packed for transport. Packaging requirements depend on the quantity, board lengths, destination and chosen delivery method.

  • Customer or project reference
  • Product and finish
  • Profile and dimensions
  • Quantities
  • Package count

TWO SURFACE DIRECTIONS

Larch in KAEN Carbon deep-char finish

KAEN

Deep char, preserved

For KAEN finishes, the pronounced carbon surface remains the defining visual feature. The result is a deep, tactile texture with strong light and shadow.

KIME

Charred, brushed and refined

For KIME finishes, the charred surface is brushed to reveal more of the natural timber grain. Colour and oil treatment are then used to create the specified final expression.

A NATURAL MATERIAL

Consistency without erasing character

No two timber boards are identical. Grain, knots, density and the way each surface responds to fire create natural variation throughout an order.

Manufacturing establishes a controlled finish direction, but it does not turn timber into a printed surface. This variation is part of the depth and character that architects and clients choose charred timber for.

Request and approve physical samples before confirming the order. Samples represent an expected visual range rather than an exact copy of every finished board.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MATERIAL

Production depends on experienced judgement

Machines create repeatable stages, but timber still requires human attention. The Inflamed production team monitors the surface, adjusts the process for the selected material and inspects the finished order before packing.

MANUFACTURING QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

01Where does Inflamed manufacture its charred timber?

Inflamed burns, brushes and finishes timber at its production facility in Kaunas, Lithuania.

02Is every finish manufactured in the same way?

No. The production route depends on the timber species and selected finish. KAEN retains a pronounced deep-char surface, while KIME finishes are brushed to reveal more of the timber grain before finishing.

03Can I approve a sample before ordering?

Yes. Physical samples allow you to assess the texture, colour and natural variation before confirming the project specification.

04Which timber species do you char?

The principal options include spruce, larch, Japanese Cedar and Accoya®. Reclaimed timber is handled separately because every batch is different.

05Can Inflamed manufacture project-specific profiles and dimensions?

Available profiles and dimensions depend on the selected timber and project requirements. Send the required specification so the factory team can confirm feasibility.

06Does every finished board look identical?

No. Timber is a natural material, and differences in grain, knots and density influence how each board responds to charring and finishing. Samples represent an intended visual range.

07How is quality checked?

Orders are visually checked against the confirmed species, finish, profile, dimensions, board lengths, quantities and general surface direction before packaging.

08Can you manufacture large project orders?

Inflamed can assess large and technically specific enquiries. Send the approximate quantity, dimensions, required lengths, finish, application and target date so production feasibility can be confirmed.

09Where do you deliver?

Inflamed arranges deliveries across Europe and can assess enquiries from destinations around the world. Delivery is quoted according to the order and destination.

10What information should I send for a quotation?

Provide the application, project location, species, preferred finish, profile, dimensions, required lengths, approximate quantity, target date and any available drawings or schedules.
